October 16
I beg you, wait for God, don't be so religious! To
have nothing to show for yourself and to be
waiting for God is better than to be polishing
your piety. We shall not become godless by
waiting for God--on the contrary, the absolute
truth of God's cause will grow within our hearts,
and that is all that matters. A true word once in
ten years is dearer to me than a daily sermon; it
is the genuineness that matters. Don't say, "The
Lord has done this, it is all God's doing," unless
you are certain. Don't use so many pious words
when you don't know for sure. A single genuine
moment in God's kingdom has much greater
consequences than a thousand religious
practices. We have to learn this.
Not everything that is printed, not everything
religious that one invents, not every word uttered,
comes from God, even if the right words are
used. God's own will must be behind everything
that comes from him into the world. It has to be
sent, and then it will be genuine. We need to
ask, "Dear Father in Heaven, we don't want to
eat and drink bushels of religion, oh no!--a few
crumbs of the bread of heaven mean more to
us than a whole oven-full of false bread. Give
one true crumb to the world, but let it be genuine,
so genuine that everything ungenuine shows
black against it--one pearl so brilliant that all
false pearls are put in the shade!"
