October 10
God protects the oppressed nations and will
see that they receive justice. Christians should
serve, not rule--with their acts of violence they
are worse than the heathen. Today Christ's
spirit is very near and moves upright hearts
everywhere, without asking what kind of religion
they cling to. Now for the first time the gospel of
Christ, not the gospel of the Christians, is
central. I wish that it were possible for you to
drop the term "mission," a name that is not
fitting for us. Missions are from people, not from
God. They may well do good, but only in a
human sense, and the spirit of God has little to
say.
Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt, from
Christ in the World, Letters to China No. 73,
December 1906.
