October 7
God is not looking for heroic figures, wonderful
people who captivate others with their charisma.
It must have been quite baffling to the educated
world when Jesus pronounced, "Blessed are
the poor in spirit." Blessed are the simple and
those with limited education who do not want to
understand everything with their intellect.
Blessed are they who do not always think they
have to put themselves forward to show how
smart they are. Blessed are they who do not
theorize about heavenly things. Blessed are
they who keep to the way that is shown them,
whatever life brings.
What I am saying is that the day laborers are
blessed, those who live hand-to-mouth and yet
are skilled with their hoe and pickaxe. Blessed a
re the farm workers with their plow, who cannot
think much about anything except how best to
do their work. Blessed are the craftsmen who
create their handicrafts and work hard, but do
not read many books. Blessed are all such
people whom we label uneducated--for these
people are taught by God.
God be praised and thanked! The kingdom of
heaven belongs to such as these, who appear
poor in spirit to the world, for it is these who are
the clever ones in God's eyes. They understand
him, for they live according to their hearts.
Others live according to their heads, and there-
fore in the meantime cannot be used by God.
They are too concerned about what might
happen, and do not leave the Father freedom to
act.
