We can encounter great uncertainty of faith
because of our failings and foolish actions, and
through the sins we commit in ignorance (or,
all too often, knowingly). By this we surely make
it difficult for God to work in us. But it will not
hinder him so long as we have a heart that
acknowledges our guilt and remains open,
sincere, honest, and ready to start again.
There are also weaknesses we cannot master;
we will have to fight them throughout our whole
lives and we will keep failing. But that must not
cause us to doubt. Our Lord will not look at what
we cannot do--he knows us--but he will look
at our will, our troubles, sorrow, eagerness,
seriousness, and honesty. It is our fault if we
fail; and usually the reason for it is that we do
not have faith and do not give our whole heart to
him.
Let us believe what the apostle says (1
Thessalonians 5:24): "The one who calls you is
faithful and he will do it" in spite of our
weaknesses.
