SGI-USA changes liturgy book

by chiefstoneeagle@[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Reginald Carpenter) Apr 10, 2008 at 12:19 AM

SGI-USA changes liturgy book. It was announced/ published in the WT -
World Tribune newspaper #3699, dated March 28, 2008, in a headline that:
"New Liturgy Books Soon Available. The updated edition features changes
in the silent prayer format."

The news article reads:

"New liturgy books will be available in April at all SGI-USA bookstores
across the nation."

"SGI-USA has made changes to the prayer format -- in the sounding of
the bell during sutra recitation and also in the silent prayers -- to
refine the English rendering of the original Japanese terms and to make
the format consistent with the way SGI members conduct daily sutra
recitation throughout the world."

"In the fourth silent prayer, for instance, the first section of the
previous version contains the phrase, "I pray to bring forth Buddhahood
from within my life, change my karma and fulfill my wishes in the
present and the future."

"This section has been modified to, "I pray to bring forth Buddhahood
from within my life and accomplish my own human revolution, change my
destiny and fulfill my wishes in the present and the future."

"Also, the fourth prayer no longer contains parenthetical instructions
to chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo three times following the first passage."

"In the final passage of the fourth prayer, the last three words of
the phrase, "I pray for peace throughout the world and the happiness of
all living beings.", have been changed to "all humanity."

"The silent prayers serve to remind us of basic aspects of our
Buddhist practice for oneself and others," said SGI-USA Advisor Guy
McCloskey. "It is not the language itself, but our sincerity and
commitment that are most im****tant."

"The liturgy also contains a slight modification to the practice of
sounding the bell. After ringing the bell before chanting
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo three times at the start of morning and evening
prayers, the bell is not rung again before starting the recitation of
the "Expedient Means" ****tion of the sutra."
