Actually its because of two reasons, none you listed.

A wealthy society doesnt need additional strong backs to help on the
farm, so the culture tends to put peer pressure on smaller families,
with its attendant larger ability to have more free money to play
with. Folks make the choice between more kids, or a college education
and a big screen for the ones they already have.

And of course, abortion.  

Africa will implode one of these days due to the rampant HIV epidemic
and watch for Indian culture to start limiting their family size
before long (see first reason).  India has the largest middle class in
the world, with the Chinese following not all that far behind. 

Your "dark meat" fascination is noted with some amusement.  A LOT of
