How we shroud God's glory

Devotional Guide For the week of May 11, 2008

MOTHERıS DAY

How we shroud Godıs glory

To read the Bible in one year, today read Psalms 123-125

To Know:

³Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have
come
not to abolish them but to fulfill them.² (Matt. 5:17)

³Whereıs the beef?² These three little words made someone millions of
dollars. A hamburger chain used this disparaging question to cast doubt on
the amount of meat in competitorsı sandwiches. Anyone craving a plump,
juicy
hamburger would certainly think twice before buying from rivals. An
im****tant question for any serious student of the Sermon on the Mount is
³Whatıs the beef?² The prophets had a beef with Israel because God had a
beef with his people. Jesus came to do what the nation failed to do;
therefore, what was the prophetıs complaint?

Godıs controversy with his people was that they did not live for his
glory.
God is good. Goodness is at the heart of the divine being. God commanded
his
people to be as good as he is. This meant being good hearted, not merely
good deed doers. Jesus knew that human goodness was only skin deep. A
ruler
directed a question to Christ addressing him as, ³Good Teacher.² Jesus
retorted. ³Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.² (Lk.
18:18,19) Jesus might have as easily said, ³Do not call me good unless you
call me God.² God made us in his own image. Down deep we are not good,
because we shroud Godıs glory. Thatıs the beef.

To Do:

Godıs beef with sinners is that our violation of his will defaces his
glory.
Paul analyzed human guilt when he wrote to the Romans, ³Šall have sinned
and
fall short of the glory of God.² (3:23) God created the world to manifest
his glory. Jesus of Nazareth denied himself and was crucified for the
glory
of God. No greater glory was ever given to God than when the Son of God
died
rather than deny his Father the right to send him to an unjust death.
Being
born of God, we ought to trust Christ the way Christ trusted his Father.

To Ask:

Father, thank you for your Spirit that enables me to exalt your will over
my
own.
