Devotional Guide For the week of March 30, 2008

CAN WE BE PURE?

About being content

To read the Bible in one year, today read Judges 16-18

To Know:

³But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, until the time of
the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.² (Dan.
12:4)

How fast can life speed up before it flings us all off? ³Stop the world I
want to get off² is not a new sentiment. There is something downright
sinister about the accelerating pace of life. The Broadway play, Ragtime,
has the line, ³Speed up the belt, speed up the belt.² The belt was on
Henry
Ford¹s assembly line. Ford makers sped up the belt to increase profits at
the cost of their workers¹ sanity and safety. Making more cars and more
money might be good for the company, but it was murder on the workers. For
many, life has become a terrible treadmill. When Jesus Christ takes
charge,
life slows down. He gives us one priority, himself. Pleasing him in
everything is our only concern. Isaiah prophesied, ³For thus said the Lord
God, the Holy One of Israel, ŒIn returning and rest you shall be saved; in
quietness and in trust shall be your strength.¹² (Is. 30:15) The Psalmist
wrote, ³It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating
the
bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.² (Ps. 127:2) He
satisfies us with himself and provides us with all the things we need.

To Do:

The latest generation, the one called X, has quickly discovered that
ac***ulating the things of this world in unparalleled abundance simply
does
not satisfy. We were meant to be satisfied by knowing that God loves us
and
offers himself to be loved by us. Life goes by much more slowly for the
person who is content.
