HARRY TRUMAN AND GOSPEL TRUTH
About an omen
To read the Bible in one year, today read Psalms 105-107
To Know:
³I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth
comparing
with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with
eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God; for the creation was
subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of him who
subjected in it hope; because the creation itself will be set free from
its
bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God.²
(Rm.8: 18-21)
Harry S. Trumanıs election on November 2, 1948 confounded pollsters and
stunned the nation. Conventional wisdom had already conceded the 48
election to Governor Thomas Dewey and some newspapers actually reported
his
victory on November 3rd. That was the first election I remember. I was
nine
years old and greatly impressed by the astonished reaction of adults to
the
news in the morning that the presidency did not belong to Dewey as so many
thought the night before. Politically speaking, Truman had come back from
the dead.
Never in history has a total defeat been so completely reversed as the
early
morning when a dead man returned to the land of the living to live
forevermore. That happened on Easter morning, beginning a new creative
work
of God. The first creation began with the emergence of the material
universe and culminated by placing man on earth. In Christ, the new
creation
comes into existence in the reverse order of the old creation. First
humans
are made new, then the remainder of creation follows.
To Do:
We who believe in Jesus Christ are harbingers of the future. Christians
are
an omen. We are an omen to those who imagine that they are safe in their
faithlessness. Many modern Americans rest in the false confidence that the
Bible can be opposed without consequences. The facts are otherwise. The
universe at its farthest reaches must become a fit place in which Jesus
Christ can live on eternally with those who are his. The great question
that
is posed to everyone is; will I unite myself to Christ by faith or live
apart from him in unbelief?
