How the Christian Life is a trust

Devotional Guide For the week of May 4, 2008

HARRY TRUMAN AND GOSPEL TRUTH

How the Christian life is a trust

To read the Bible in one year, today read Psalms 99-101

To Know:

³Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from
every
defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of
God.² (2 Cor. 7:1)

Harry S. Truman was catapulted into the presidency on April 12, 1945 by
the
death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. One day standing on a bridge above the
Hudson River, Roosevelt exposed his cynical attitude toward serving in a
public office. A certain politician was seeking office in New York and
wanted President Roosevelt, the leader of the party, to campaign for him.
Roosevelt assured the man that if the president was reelected those
seeking
a lesser post would be virtually swept into office. The president, to
punctuate his point, directed the office-seekerıs attention to boats in
the
river below. Garbage falling off a scow was being sucked along behind the
vessel. The presidentıs point was that like the garbage, all democratic
candidates would be swept in behind the election of the President.

When an unsavory decision was urged upon him, Truman refused to soil the
office that he entered when Roosevelt succumbed. He knew that if he
dirtied
the presidency, the office would remain soiled long after he was gone.
Truman resisted the temptation to do wrong in order to keep the office of
the president unsullied.

To Do:

The Christian life is a trust. We are to keep our selves clean and pass
the
pure truth of Christ to the next generation. Not everyone that calls
himself
or herself a Christian accepts the obligation to conform their conscience
to
the Bible. Some feel themselves at liberty to reinterpret the scriptures
of
the Old and New Testament in their own image. Was there ever a time in the
history of the world when the Bible was needed more than now?
